Here at CLEAN we deliver almost one million pieces of linen to customers located across the UK on a daily basis, with transportation logistics just one of the founding principles that ensures we can provide an excellent service built on quality, efficiency and innovation. In recent years, due to the combined impact of an ageing professional HGV driver workforce and the lack of new entrants coming through to replace those leaving the sector, there has been a 25% decrease in new driver license acquisitions which has led to a shortage of almost 60,000 HGV drivers.
In recent years, due to the combined impact of an ageing professional HGV driver workforce and the lack of new entrants coming through to replace those leaving the sector, there has been a 25% decrease in new driver license acquisitions which has led to a shortage of almost 60,000 HGV drivers.
The impact of this shortage is affecting many businesses across the UK in an economy that is reliant on the movement of heavy goods. As CLEAN continues on its growth trajectory, we are more dedicated than ever to providing opportunities to both our existing and future employees that serve CLEAN and the British transportation industry as a whole.
As part of our commitment to combatting this skills shortage, we have developed a three-stage plan that will not only eliminate many of the challenges and obstacles that have led to this shortage, such as the financial costs of becoming a HGV driver, but also provide high-quality training that will upskill our drivers to the benefit of the economy, as more qualified professionals strengthen the nation’s workforce.
CLEAN’s Driver Academy
The foundation of our training initiative, the CLEAN Driver Academy will implement training courses for both van drivers (B Licence up to 2.5 tonnes MPW) and LGV drivers (C1, C and CE over 3.5 tonnes MPW), with LGV drivers training towards a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).
Drivers will undergo courses covering speed awareness, braking systems, road craft, load security and manual handling principles in addition to customer service and customer care. All courses include question papers with a 75% pass mark required to successfully complete the CLEAN Driver Academy programme.
Driving Assessments
To ensure that we train our existing workforce to an exemplary standard, eight internally-trained Driver Assessors will carry out continuous in-cab assessments across all CLEAN laundries.
In addition to our dedicated training programme designed to upskill our own workforce, CLEAN is committed to carrying out induction training for new drivers and agency drivers to ensure the delivery of consistent high standards and to promote good practice from the outset and throughout.
